Stephen’s Journey – February – Amazing News!

It’s with great excitement and joy that I’m able to share the news that my family has been waiting to hear for over 2 years; we have a kidney donor and date set for transplant! Over 2 years ago when we received the devastating news that our unborn son’s kidneys had stopped functioned, we began hoping for a miracle that this day would come when he would get a second chance at life. Back then in 2010, we automatically assumed that either myself or my husband would donate a kidney to Stephen. But soon after he was born we were preparing for his double nephrectomy surgery (having both kidneys removed), we learned that neither of us were Stephen’s blood type. Which in and of itself was a bit devastating. Now we would have to either seek out a hero to donate to Stephen, or hope for a cadaver kidney.

After a long search beginning in November 2011, and after lots of pleading on my blog, Facebook, and via email chains, we proceeded to test multiple friends and family. Through that search, we found two matches for Stephen and out of those two people, one has decided to be Stephen’s hero and donate one of her kidney’s to him. There’s no doubt in my mind that she is Stephen’s angel and a true hero. And after all of this is over, she and her family will forever be entwined in our family. This truly is the most selfless gift you could ever give someone, and I only wish that there was someone I could repay her.

For now, our goal is to keep Stephen healthy and continue to fight this cdiff (bacterial infection) and hope that come April 11th (our transplant day) he will be ready to receive his gift of life!!!

I’m sure there are some people reading this who know exactly how I’m feeling and others who have given this amazing gift to either a family member, friend, or complete stranger. I’d love to hear from you about how you’ve been able to thank your hero and if there are any suggestions on how and what we can do to attempt to thank our hero for her gift and make her surgery and recovery as easy as possible.
